REPORT ON VISIT TO MEDAN & BANDA ACEH
13-15 APRIL 2005

On 26 December 2004, a major earthquake occurred near the Northern part of Sumatera which caused heavy damages to buildings. It also created the occurrence of Tsunami immediately after. Phuket, Sri Lanka, Andaman Islands, Maldives and the western coasts of Northern Sumatera including the town of Banda Aceh, were badly damaged.
The death toll in Northern Sumatera represented the highest casualties of all the places that were affected by this catastrophe.
The R.C. of Kuching Central immediately responded and set up a Tsunami Disaster Relief Efforts committee chaired by PP Andre Suharto. On 3rd & 5th January 2005, a total of 2,782 KGs of medical aids were airflown to Medan for distributions by R.C. of Langkat (jointly with Aceh Sepakat NGO) to the affected areas in Northern Sumatera. At the same time, fund raising exercise was also initiated.
It has been slightly over 100 days since the incident happened and the committee is of the opinion that a timely visit to the Aceh province is now appropriate. Hence, PP Andre Suharto and Rtn. Ng Yaw Hua (a member of the Tsunami Disaster Relief Efforts Committee) left Kuching for Banda Aceh via an overnight stay in Medan from 13 to 15 April 2005. PP Andre Suharto is also a member of the Rotary District 3310 Tsunami Disaster Relief Committee whose chairman is PDG Gerald
Minjoot.

| UPDATES
FROM R.C. OF KUCHING CENTRAL ON ACEH, 05
JANUARY 2005, 12:30PM |
|
January
29th, 2005 |
|
| |
|
The
Rotary Club of Langkat (located 80KM from Medan
towards Banda Aceh) has received the 1,640Kg of
medical supplies that the R.C. of Kuching Central
sent to them on Monday this week. They have received
the consigment without a hitch and WITHOUT problems
at the Indonesian Customs & Excise Dept.
The Committee is now awaiting for more feedback from
Sumatera on the immediate needs.
The Committee has now raised RM132,710.00. The fund
raising activities have been done without any
publicity in the local media yet. The Committee has
asked each Rotarian in the club to approach their
business associates and friends of course with the
support of letter of appeal issued by the committee.
Through words of mouth, many organisations in
Kuching are helping the committee to raise money by
getting their staff to contribute. Tomorrow morning
the committee will receive a RM5000 donations
collected by the staff of a public listed company
based in Kuching. This is encouraging indeed.
The committee will make publicity tomorrow and hope
that the news will spur and inspire more people to
chip in.
The money raised will address immediate needs,
medium term and long term needs. Many organisations
and individuals are focussing on immediate needs and
we may want to start thinking of the medium and long
term needs.
Thank you all for the kind words showered on the
committee. These words of encouragements have helped
to inspire us further and strengthened our
convictions so that the committee can move on with
confidence. You have played an important part to
help the committee move on.
