HELP FOR TSUNAMI VICTIMS MUST BE SUSTAINED, SAYS ESTESS - 4 FEB 2005

February 4th, 2005

Interviewed by Gerald Deckart
Rotary Magazine
4 February 2005

RI President Glenn E. Estess Sr.

Rotarians all over the world have responded spontaneously and generously to the tsunami disaster in South Asia. At the Presidential Celebration in Osnabrück, Rotary Magazin editor Gerald Deckart asked RI President Glenn E. Estess Sr. about his ideas for Rotary involvement.

Deckart: Will Rotary International launch its own program to help flood victims in South Asia?

Estess:
No. Rotary would never have the capabilities to respond to this catastrophe, which is beyond imagination, at the same comprehensive level that governments or global relief organizations can provide. As with other disasters, we rely on the proven initiative of clubs and districts, which have already shown excellent results.

How do you think Rotary and its clubs should take action?

First of all, help needs to be sustained. Currently, there are a lot of relief organizations on location. Rotary should have a long-term perspective. We should concentrate on those needs that will remain in half a year or a year from now - to rebuild infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and affordable homes.

How can The Rotary Foundation help?

A gift to the South Asia Solidarity Fund will be used to support recovery projects in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, and Thailand. There are other Foundation programs that can offer support. The easiest is Matching Grants. Any club that wants to help can check the various forms of assistance listed on the RI Web site. I would like to thank all Rotarians who have already responded for their great services.

A VISIT TO PUAN NORLIDA SUHAILI,, 2ND MAY 2005.

May 5th, 2005

Dear Rotarians,

On the afternoon of 2 May 2005, DG Dr. Ivor visited Puan Norlida, the spouse of the late AG Hj Odita Ibrahim at her residence.

Also in the entourage were AG John King & spouse Jennie, PP Andre Suharto & spouse Norzan as well as Joyce Kiyui, spouse of PP Dr. Samuel Kiyui.

We arrived at 2.30pm and had a long and relaxing conversations till 4.30pm. Four of the 5 children came out to greet us. The children seemed to understand what has happenned to their late father according to Norlida. Everything seems to be coming out fine and she was delighted to have us.

I have invited her to attend our installation night dinner on 2 July as my guest. DG Ivor has also assured her that she is still our friend in Rotary and has encouraged her to keep in touch with Rotary and to approach anyone of us if help is needed.

Yours in Rotary
PP Andre Suharto
