Heart surgery in Chicago gives two Iraqi children the gift of life.

February 2006.

Five days after leaving Baghdad, heart patient Masuma Hmod, with her motherm Anas Meften, gazes in wonder at her welcoming party.

Masuma's surgery a success, the only lifelong trace of the girl's hear condition will be a four-inch scar across her chest.

When Ali Ayad Karim, now 10, and Masuma Hmod, now 1, were born in Iraq, doctors discovered they had a severe congenital heart condition that's routinely corrected with surgery in wealthy countries. The young patients go on to lead normal, healthy lives. But in Iraq, where suicide bombers strike almost daily and the hospitals are filled with war casualties, such children die young. If they're fortunate, like Ali, they spend their days quietly at home, playing Nintendo or other games. Ali rarely left the single room he shared with his parents and two younger sisters. His condition, called tetralogy of Fallot, caused oxygen-poor blood to flow through his heart, so that a simple walk down the street was enough to turn his face blue.

In August, Ali and Masuma flew to Chicago to undergo open-heart surgery, arranged and funded through a partnership of Rotarians and Muslim community leaders. They are among more than 4,000 children in 60 developing countries who have received open-heart surgery through Gift of Life International, a nonprofit founded and operated by Rotarians.

In the wake of 9/11 and the war with Iraq, relations between Muslims and non-Muslims in the United States have deteriorated quickly. "We were kind of wary. This was new territory for us," admits Rotarian George Harris, who is chair of the District 6450 (Illinois) Gift of Life program and a pediatrician at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital, where the operation was performed. But any trepidation was quickly dispelled, he says, by the dedication of Rotarians and volunteers at the Mosque Foundation of Chicago, which handled translations, transportation, and housing. "This was long overdue," Harris adds. The Rotarians also partnered with the Iraqi American Association of Illinois and several Catholic groups. Local Rotarians donated the flights through United Mileage Plus partners. The team members are now planning more joint efforts.

"We are all traveling in the same direction," says Dr. Yacoub Al-Ubaid, originally from Baghdad. "Rotary doesn't discriminate, whether a child is from Russia or China or Iraq. That is my philosophy, too. I hope we can do more humanitarian service together."

Several days after the surgeries in early September, the children arrive at the hospital for a check-up. Ali plays the big brother, putting his arm protectively around Masuma, who watches his every move. He seems confident and mature for his age, but that's not
surprising, since he's spent most of his life with adults, unable to go to school. "I hope to become a principal," he tells a visitor.

While Ali's chest was being cut open by surgeons in Chicago, more than 40 people gathered at his home in Baghdad, his aunt says. "They prayed through the night," she says. "They kept calling the hospital. Finally, their phone rang. Ali was doing fine." Next, it was Masuma's turn, and her family also got good news. "She's drinking from the bottle now. She doesn't turn blue when she laughs," her mother reports happily.

In mid-November, after Ramadan and the children's return to Iraq, the Orland Park Rotarians honor the volunteers. The audience includes priests, reporters in jeans, Rotarians in business suits, and Muslim women in abayas. Kifah Mustapha, imam of the Mosque Foundation, tells them: "We share common interests, and we have common beliefs. The Koran tells us, whoever helps to save one life, indeed, it is as if he saved humanity itself."

ROTARACT CLUB OF SWINBURNE SARAWAK - ICE AGE 2 CHARITY MOVIE PREMIERE.

Scrat, the most unlucky but also most popular character.

On the 30th of March 2006, the Rotaract Club of Swinburne Sarawak held a charity movie premiere of the family animated feature film 'Ice Age 2' at Star Cineplex Kuching. The premiere was jointly organized together with the Interact Clubs of SMK Kuching Town No.1, SMK Kuching High, SMK St. Joseph Kuching and the Rotary Club of Kuching Central.

The members of the participating clubs and schools were very supportive and turned up in full force at the premiere. All the guests were impressed with the handbook that had been printed in conjunction with the premiere. They also agreed that the movie was highly entertaining and well worth the money.

Approximately RM5,600 was raised to promote literacy and reading in two rural primary schools on the outskirts of Kuching, Sarawak. The proceeds of the premiere would be used to purchase new and suitable reading material to be contributed at a later date to the primary schoolchildren.

THE 16TH DISTRICT ASSEMBLY AND PETS.

The 16th District Assembly and PETS (President Elects Training Seminar) was concluded successfully on 2 April 2006. There were 12 members of delegations (including 4 spouses) from Kuching Central led by President Augustine Wong and First Lady Constance.

It was an opportunity for the delegations to renew relationship with our sister club R.C. Queenstown and Melaka (who were only represented by PP Charles Chiam and spouse). We were invited for a drink by members of R C Queenstown at Clarke Quay immediately after the end of the Official Opening dinner on Friday evening at 10.30pm. R C Queenstown was led by President Koh Juat Muay. Also present were DGN Chris Chen and spouse Shirley, PP Erich Schneider, PP Jack Chuang, Rtn Wolf, PP Peter Debraux (he was president in 1995/96 when both clubs, together with sister club R C Chia Yii West & Miri Club undertook a joint gravity water supply project at Long San, Ulu Baram) and PE Lothar Till (with spouse).

This year, DGE Dr Wu Dar Ching presented a PETS certificate to each club's PE who attended the training. The PEs were called according to their Rotary District grouping in multiple of 5 groups. A photo session for each 5 group was taken together with President S. R. Nathan of the Republic of Singapore. However, in view of the fact that our PE Chai Ko Jee had to return to Kuching that morning, he was not present to receive the certificate...........as well as the photo with the President S.R. Nathan.

The general feedback from the Assembly delegates are that this year there are more new contents in the training sessions. The Past President Institute has added colour to the occassion and was well attended by 120 Past Presidents.

While PETS represents training sessions for President Elects, the Assembly is a training event meant for the incoming club officers. The lack of incoming club officers attending the District Assembly is worrying the District leadership because of the uncertainties if they are able to discharge their duties effectively which otherwise will lead the club to deterioration and possibly eventual dysfunction of the clubs.

THE 19TH PAN BORNEO INTER-CLUBS MEET CONCLUDED WITH SUCCESS

PP Andre, DGN Edward & PP Sinsoon (L to R) on the 18th green.
.

The 19th Pan Borneo Inter-Clubs Meet, which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Bintulu from 28-30 April 2006, ended with more determination and conviction to continue this event for many more years to come in view of its importance and significance in enhancing the close relationships between Rotary Clubs in Borneo particularly.

PP Andre Suharto was the only person representing the Rotary Club of Kuching Central.

The event started on the afternoon of 28 April 2006 with golf fellowship at the well maintained, beautiful and challenging Bintulu Golf Club. This fellowship golf was organised by PP Sinsoon Jabu from the Rotary Club of Bintulu. Non-golfers were taken for a visit to one of the top ports in South-East Asia, the ultra modem and purpose built Bintulu Port (http://www.bpsb.com.my).

There was a fellowship dinner on the first evening held at the Kidurong club hosted by Rtn. YB. Senator Hii Tiong Kuoh.

An impromptu fund raising was also held during the fellowship dinner where nearly everyone purchased a RM10 ticket towards a lucky draw for 2 pieces of beautiful hand-stitched blankets produced by Rosemary, spouse to PP David Sukhdev of the Rotary Club of Miri. A total of RM2,000.00 was raised and channelled towards the 19th Pan Borneo project.

The official opening ceremony was held the following morning at the Parkcity Everly Hotel. The guest of honour was YB Datuk Tiong King Siing and represented by Mr Pau Chiong Ung, President of the Bintulu Chinese Business Association. To our great and pleasant surprise, YB Datuk Tiong King Siing and Mr Pau Chiong Ung donated RM10,000 and RM1,000 respectively towards the 19th Pan Borneo project.

Mr Pau Chiong Ung (2nd left) officiating the opening ceremony. Also present was DG Tay Kim Ann, OC PP Lee Lei Kiak (2nd right) and President Joseph Bong of R C Bintulu host club.
