A Pan Borneo project is carried out by the host club
every year when clubs in Borneo meet together for the
Pan Borneo Inter-Clubs Meet. The recently concluded 19th
Pan Borneo Inter-Clubs Meet saw the official opening of
the Rotary Park at Lucky Tower, Tanjung Batu, Bintulu,
Sarawak by District Governor Tay Kim Ann and attendees
of the Meet.
Every
Pan Borneo project is financed by a RM1,000.00
contributions from each Rotary club located in Sabah,
Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan.
The
Rotary Club of Bintulu, the host club for the 19th
Pan Borneo Inter-Clubs Meet, chose to build a Rotary
Park in view of its importance in enhancing the quality
of life and environment. The Sarawak state government
provides open spaces and parks near populated areas
where residents could go for passive and active
recreation. The Rotary Club of Bintulu supports the
government’s policy of developing these open spaces and
parks by working together with Bintulu Development
Authority (BDA) too develop a piece of land designated
as an open space in one of the residential areas in
Bintulu.
|
|
|
This piece of land, which is located
at Lucky Tower residential areas, has been adopted and
developed by the Rotary Club of Bintulu into a community park.
This project was initiated in 2002. However, due to
lack of funds, the project did not materialised.

This Rotary Park is a community park that caters for passive
recreation for the nearby residents and its neighbourhood.
The facilities available in the Rotary Park are swings and
see-saws, concrete benches, foot reflexology paths, gazebo,
barbeque pits, garden tables and concreted areas for
traditional children games. The park will be planted with
trees and turfed with grasses to create conducive
environment for everyone to enjoy.
A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the
official opening of the park. DG Tay Kim Ann lead the
cutting of the long ribbon with representatives from each
club in Borneo. Project banner bearing the names of each
Rotary Club in Borneo are hung on the ribbon. Each club
representatives get to bring back this project banner
bearing their club’s name.
DG Tay Kim Ann also planted a tree in the
center of the marked witnessed by PDG John Cheah and PDG
Abang Hj Nawawi as well as Rotarians.

From
the airport, they proceeded to check-in at the Crowne
Plaza Riverside Hotel. Transport and sightseeing
activities were provided by Telang Usan Travel. While
eight of the total delegations played two rounds of golf
at Damai Golf & Country Club and Sarawak Golf Club (http://www.kgswak.com),
the remaining delegates went to visit places of
interests.
The Rotary Club of Kuching Central hosted dinners every
evening. The first diner on the evening of 20 April was
held at the Sarawak Club followed by a dinner at the
Rock Road Seafood Restaurant and Hai Pah Wang Restaurant
on the second and final evening respectively.
|
|
|
There
seemed to be instant warmth and friendships around
even though this is the first time that the Rotarians
from both sides meet. The chemistry could not have been
better. There was much laughter, jokes and
‘connections’ around. The visit was prompted by one of
the female Rotarians from R.C. Taipei Golden Eagle by
the name of IPP Jenny Wu who coincidentally was in the
same elevator with First Lady Constance. Seeing the
Rotary pin on IPP Jenny Wu’s dress, a conversation was
initiated by First Lady Constance. From there,
everything else fall in place naturally that led to this
visit.

ROTARY
CLUB OF KUCHING CENTRAL CO-ORDINATING THE
COLLECTIONS OF MONETARY DONATIONS IN DISTRICT
3310
TO HELP YOGYAKARTA EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS

3400.
6 June 2006 |
The Rotary
Club of Kuching Central and the Rotary E-Club of District
3310 are making initiatives to raise funds amongst clubs
and individuals in District 3310 towards the earthquake
survivors in Yogyakarta, indonesia.
The Rotary E-Club of District 3310 are making awareness
of this project in the District while the Rotary Club
of Kuching Central established contacts with the Rotarians
in Indonesia.

Balmater assesses the damage in his district.
|
The 5.9-magnitude earthquake
that struck Central Java on 27 May left an estimated
6,000 people dead, up to 57,000 injured, and thousands
homeless. In its aftermath, disrupted distribution systems
in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas hindered relief
efforts.
While many Rotary clubs and districts have responded
to the disaster by donating necessary supplies, more
assistance is needed. To address this need, District
3400 (Indonesia) has established a disaster relief fund
to assist those affected.
The first phase of the project will address the immediate
emergency situation by focusing on the basic daily needs
of survivors and coping with the overflowing hospitals.
According to Rodolfo
Balmater, district governor of District 3400, Rotarians
have been quick to offer aid. For instance, he says,
"At the moment of need, our Rotarians in Bali alternatively
flew to the disaster site bringing blood to the hospitals."
Meanwhile, in Bandung city, which is about 180 miles
from earthquake hit areas, more than 50 Rotaractors
were trained in 24 hours to support Rotarians in Yogyakarta.
They contributed by "caring for the wounded and
distributing food and blankets to far flung places,"
Balmater says.
The second phase, however,
will involve restoration and rebuilding of the community
with the neediest of its residents in mind.
Balmater notes the quick response of Rotary International
leadership in assuring Rotarians in the stricken area
that material and financial support will be available
for quake survivors.
"With this assurance, our Rotarians become confident
and motivated to identify several projects related to
schools, clinics, and libraries, as well as livelihood
programs for the poor," he says. "And, once
again, demonstrating to fellow Rotarians that the value
of the organization is the vast network it has created
in the world."
