For the very first time in District 3310, a Leadership Seminar was conducted by Past RI Director, David Linett, Chairman of The Rotary Leadership Institute and his three colleagues:

1.PDG Frank Wargo, Vice Chairman, Rotary Leadership Institute, Northeast USA Division

2. PDG Leon Horwitz, Secretary, Rotary Leadership Institute, Northeast USA Division

3. PDG Andrew Cheng, Faculty Member, Rotary Leadership Institute, Northeast USA Division

It was held at the Puteri Pacific Hotel, Johor Bahru from 4th – 6 August 2006 and organised by PDG Fong Hoe Beng, Rotary Leadership Institute Regional Vice Chairman for Southeast Asia and assisted by PDG Michael Graham Parry.

Attendance was for potential leaders of Rotary and by invitation only. A total of 44 invited attendees turned up from District 3310, 3300 (Malaysia except Johor, Melaka, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan FT), 3400 (Indonesia) and 3450 (Hongkong, Macau & Mongolia).

Also present were District3300 Governor Dato Jimmy Lim, District3400 Governor Sujatmiko, District34500 Governor Tony Wong, IPDG (3400) Rudi Balmater, IPDG3450 Peter Wan, PDG3450 Anthony Hung, PDG3450 Gloria Cheng, PDG3310 David Tong, PDG3310 Kenneth Chew. DG Dr Wu Dar Ching officiated the opening of the seminar.

Representing D3310 were DGN Edward Sung Burongoh, PP K. A. Abraham, PP Ron Pereira, PP Gunasegaran, AG Dr John Chan, AG Jimmy Leong, PP Lee Kong Hwee, PP Leong Chee Woh, PP Patrick Panai, PP Andrew Tan, PP Hj Andre Suharto, Rtn Leslie Sim and Rtn Wilfred James.

There was a pre-event fellowship dinner on the evening of 4th August 2006. The seminar itself was held from 9am to 5pm on 5th Aug. 2006 and from 9am to 12.30pm on 6th Aug. 2006.

The kickoff of the event was held in one room and thereafter the attendees were almost equally divided into two groups. Each group was placed in a separate room: PRID David Linett and PDG Andrew Cheng facilitated one group while PDG Frank Wargo and PDG Leon Horwitz facilitated the other group.

Attendees were trained on how to be an effective facilitator. Many different facilitating techniques were presented to the attendees with opportunity for each attendee to do role play. It was definitely a week-end of fun and learning with much experiences being shared and ideas exchanged. ‘Graduates’ of this Faculty Orientation Program are encouraged to organise similar seminar at the region in District 3310.

The Rotary Leadership Institute is a recommended unofficial affiliate of Rotary International, but not an official program of RI nor under its control.

Clubs and districts looking to train Rotarians as leaders at local levels can now access online a wide array of resources developed by the Rotary Leadership Institute. Established in 1994 to assist in improving the Rotary knowledge and leadership skills of the future leaders of clubs and districts, the Rotary Leadership Institute is a multi-district program already functional in Zones 31 and 32 in the United States, and is forming divisions around the world.

The institute offers a training program in three full-day sessions, followed by graduate seminars. Trainers are carefully selected from among Rotarians with outstanding leadership abilities and prepared to conduct innovative and participatory course sessions.
