“We choose recipients who love to do what they do and who have a positive impact on the community and the people they helped. This year, the Vocational Service committee decided to honor and recognize these two recipients for their exemplary work and their commitment to the Sarawak’s community and its youth”, says Vocational Service Director, Mr Ng Yaw Hua.

Ms Noa@Bunda Ak Bayur started working with Cheshire Home since 1978. As the Ward Supervisor, her job includes assisting the Matron for staff supervision during her absent and safe handling of food and second hand goods donated by the public.

For Madam Chen Fui Eng, Salvation Army Children Home has been considered a second home to her for more than 37years. As the Home’s Supervisor, she is in charge of the daily activities, supervises staff with educational, social, and physical welfare of 56 children aged between 2 to 19 years old. In 2005, Madam Chen received an award to recognize her as the best care giver from Mayang Sari Eudon fund, in Kuala Lumpur.

Each year, Rotary Club of Kuching Central presents Vocational Service Award to deserving recipients in recognitions of their service and contribution to the community. This year, the club will present its prestigious award to Ms Noa@Bunda ak Bayur and Madam Chen Fui Eng of the Sarawak Cheshire Home and Salvation Army Children’s Home respectively. The presentation ceremony was held on 9 September 2006 at a local hotel in Kuching where President Chai Ko Jee presented the awards in the form of certificate and cash. The ceremony was witnessed by Rotary International District Governor Dr Wu Dar Ching and his spouse Lorna accompanied by board of directors and members of the club.

The Rotary Club of Kuching Central Vocational Service Award represents the recipient’s meritorious effort to the betterment of the community. It is inline with Rotary’s Object “to encourage and foster high ethical standards and the appreciation of all useful occupations throughout a community”.

OFFICIAL VISIT OF DG DR WU DAR CHING TO R.C. KUCHING CENTRAL

DG Dr Wu Dar Ching and First Lady Lorna arrived in Kuching on 5 September 2006 direct from Singapore.  After staying for a few days, they left for Bintulu and Sibu.  They returned to Kuching on Saturday, 9 September 2006 at 11.50am from Bintulu.

DG Dr Wu and Lorna attended the weekly meeting of the R.C. of Kuching Central at 1pm at Harbour View hotel.  During the weekly meeting, there was a simple ceremony to present two Vocational Service Award to two recipients namely Ms Bunda ak Bayur and Mdm Chen Fui Eng from the Sarawak Cheshire Home and the Salvation Army Children’s Home respectively.  Much coverage were given by the local Chinese and English media.

The 2nd Club Assembly was subsequently held immediately after the weekly meeting was concluded. Each director gave their written and oral report.  It was a comprehensive report indeed which pleased DG Dr Wu.

After the directors’ report, DG Dr Wu encouraged the club to take on projects through matching grant so that the seeds money can multiply to finance bigger projects that provide more visibility in the local community.

He also encouraged each club members to continue to recruit new members so that the total membership can reach 40 members.  This is because most of the clubs’ average attendance is around 50%.  Hence with 40 members, if 20 of them can be present during weekly meetings, it will provide the numbers towards a more conducive and interesting meeting to organise.  DG Dr Wu also reminds us not too be to overboard with our strengths.  This is because our strengths may ‘close’ us which may result in ‘scaring away’ potential members from joining the club.

He liked the vibrant ness of our club members’ interactions.  With a total of 70 clubs in the District, there are many improvements that he would like all clubs to achieve.  He also announced the Pan Borneo to be held in Kuching either May or June 2007 to mark the end of the Rotary year and at the same time to enjoy after a year’s of work.
