About the project

On 25 April 1996, The Rotary Club of Kuching Central won the 'Best District 3310 Vocational Service Award'. The award was based on criteria and effectiveness of the vocational service projects in the community that were implemented by all 50 Rotary Clubs in the District 3310 covering Singapore, Johor, Melaka, Sarawak, Sabah & Brunei. Information about the project is highlighted below:

Name of Project:  

 Local Schools project to encourage the young to 
 complete minimum required schooling (a joint 
 Vocational & Youth Service project)
 

Objectives of Project:  

 1.  Reduction in students drop out rates
 2.  Increasing the number of students going
      through the minimum required schooling
 3.  Increasing the IT skills of the community
 4.  Promotion of the Intellectual Property Rights
 5.  Increased awareness of the Copyright Act
 6.  Legalised the use of software by the school
      computer clubs (at least all the Microsoft
      software)
 

Date of Project Implemented:  

 Officially launched on 18 October 1995 by District 
 Governor 3310 Datuk George Ginibun and Mr. Lauer,
 General Manager of Microsoft (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd;
 witnessed by Yang Berhormat Datuk Abang Haji
 Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg,
 Sarawak State Minister for Industrial Development &
 Minister in-charge of State Education.
 

Scope of Project:  

 The donation & distribution of legal & original copies
 of Microsoft range of desktop & multimedia
 application softwares. 

Target Recipient:  

 71 school computer clubs located throughout
 Sarawak State.

Number of Recipients:  

 Estimated 10,000 primary & secondary students
 (mostly secondary)

Cost of Project:  

 RM1,491,202.00
