THE IMPORTANCE OF
CONTINUED EDUCATION AFTER SCHOOL - A TALK FOR THE
INTERACTORS

On the 24th of January 1998, Vocational Service
Director PP. Frankie Yong organised a talk for the
interactors and the above mentioned topics. The talk
was held from 8.30 to 10.00am at CADAS Business School
Seminar Hall and the speaker was Dr. W. Chong who is
the Deputy Director of Studies, Head of Academic
Department.
The interactors were informed of the importance to
further equip themselves with additional high academic
qualifications in order to enable them to meet the
competitive challenges of the next millennium. Dr.
Chong also spoke on the difference in learning culture
between Asians and Western students where the former
learns by way of memorising facts while the latter
learns by creative thinking. Dr. Chong also touched
today's learning and gave example on developing skills
in "speed reading" where ine can achieve
reading 800 to 1000 words per minute.
Students should also refrain themselves from drinking
tea or coffee as this could damage their liver and
kidneys by extracting oxygen out from the blood due to
the presence of caffeine.
There were 30 interactors from SMK Bandar Kuching No.
1, 15 interactors from SMB Kuching High, 1 Teacher
Advisor from SMK Bandar Kuching No. 1 (Ms. Poh Siew
Ping) and SMB Kuching High (Ms Rita Wong).
Dr. Chong is a graduate from Otago University, New
Zealand majoring in Human Resource Management. He also
did a post graduate in Herbal Medicine from the
Australian College of Herbal Studies.

On
the 28th of February 1998, a Career Talk was
held at the Dewan MBKS attended by about 300
students from 7 different schools in Kuching:
St. Joseph's, St. Thomas's, St. Teresa's, St.
Mary's, Kuching High, Kuching Town and Batu
Lintang.
Seven Rotarians gave a talk on their vocation
and the qualification(s) for each different
vocations. The seven Rotarians talked on Law,
Medicine, Engineering, Architect, Management and
Information Technology. |
There was also a
"questions and answers" sessions whereby
about 15 Rotarians representing different profession(s)
were presented to answer the queries from the said
students.
